Mmmm, Pop!

Art Movements | Contemporary Explorations of Pop Art

Graphic appeal.

Painterly’s two-hour guided workshop provides a punchy, fast-paced introduction to Pop Art painting, focusing on the core concepts pioneered by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

In this class, we'll explore how Pop Art deliberately erased the line between fine art and popular culture, using commercial imagery and mechanical processes. Participants will learn key techniques such as bold outlines, flat fields of un-modeled color, and simplified graphic composition to create an iconic image—such as a stylized portrait or a recognizable consumer object—from start to finish. You’ll leave the session not only with a vibrant, frameable piece of art but also with a solid understanding of how artists use irony, repetition, and mass-media aesthetics to make a bold artistic statement. Example compositions will be provided to guide the process and stoke your imagination.

  • Pop Art is defined by its embrace of mass culture and commercial imagery, deliberately blurring the line between "high art" and "low culture." Artists used techniques inspired by advertising, comic books, and consumer products (such as soup cans, celebrities, and newspaper clippings) to produce works characterized by flat, vivid, and un-modeled colors, mechanical reproduction (like silkscreening), and bold, graphic outlines. The movement was essentially a critical and ironic commentary on consumerism and the visual saturation of modern life.

  • It’s everywhere now, but some original pioneers include Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.
