Playing Fauvist

Art Movements | Contemporary Explorations of Fauvism

A world of color.

This two-hour beginner’s class explores the revolutionary power of Fauvism (French for "wild beasts"), the early 20th-century movement led by Henri Matisse.

The workshop itself centers on learning the Fauvists' core principle: the liberation of color. Participants will learn to use pure, intense, and non-naturalistic color—painting a local color (like a face or tree trunk) with hues not seen in reality, such as vibrant reds, greens, or violets. We will focus on bold, direct brushwork and thick, colored outlines to define forms, resulting in an energetic, joyful, and highly expressive artwork where emotional resonance triumphs over realistic representation.

Painterly Original works will be provided to fuel the creative process and stoke the imagination. No experience or artistic skill required!

  • Sure! Fauvism was the first avant-garde art movement of the 20th century, defined by its radical use of pure, vibrant, and non-naturalistic color for emotional effect. Fauvist artists rejected traditional shading and perspective, instead using broad, flat planes of intense color and bold outlines to express subjective feeling and vitality. Simplification and amplification through color were key!

  • Likely in museums, but Fauvism’s influence can still be found in contemporary art today. Figures like Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Maurice de Vlaminck pioneered the movement in the early 20th century.
