Standing Still[life]
Subjects| Contemporary Explorations of Still Life Painting
Capture the moment.
OVERVIEW
This two-hour workshop provides a focused introduction to painting still-lifes—an art form that teaches fundamental concepts of composition, light, and form.
Using a simple arrangement of everyday objects, participants will learn how to observe and simplify shapes, use light and shadow (chiaroscuro) to create the illusion of three-dimensional depth, and utilize negative space to define the relationship between objects. We'll cover basic composition rules and practical techniques for rendering texture, resulting in a cohesive and thoughtfully designed final artwork that brings profound visual interest to common objects.
Painterly Original works will be provided to fuel the creative process and stoke the imagination. No experience or artistic skill required!
PRICING
All classes are $100 per canvas with a ten (10) student class minimum.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to counteract the age of disposable experiences by teaching genuine creative skills. Painterly’s framework promotes the creation of keepsake artwork that carries lasting personal value, rather than becoming clutter. In a world where art is often mass-produced or prohibitively expensive, we offer an affordable and intentional pathway for our students to create their own meaningful, display-worthy creations rooted in solid artistic foundations.
-
Still lifes were popular because they allowed artists to practice and demonstrate mastery over essential techniques like texture, light, and shadow using accessible, inanimate objects. Furthermore, these compositions were historically valued for their symbolic content, often embedding profound hidden meanings about morality, wealth, and the fleeting nature of life (vanitas) into common items.
-
Gosh, likely everywhere. They were and continue to be a popular subject for artists.
The most popular still-life painters primarily emerged during the Baroque and Post-Impressionist eras: Caravaggio and Willem Kalf mastered the opulent, realistic style of the Dutch Golden Age, using dramatic light and texture. In the modern era, Paul Cézanne radically reinterpreted the still life, using geometric structure and multiple viewpoints to make the subject foundational to modern art.
