Express Yourself
Art Movements| Contemporary Explorations of Expressionism + Abstract Expressionism
A Colorful State of Mind.
OVERVIEW
This two-hour workshop will introduce the powerful, non-representational language of both Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism, focusing on painting with raw emotion.
We'll start with Expressionism, learning how artists like Edvard Munch used distortion and non-naturalistic color to convey internal feeling rather than external reality. Then, we will transition into Abstract Expressionism, exploring the techniques of the New York School, where the act of painting itself became the subject. Students will utilize energetic gestures, dynamic strokes, and intentional color choice to translate subjective states directly onto the canvas, resulting in a visceral, emotionally honest, and completely unique artwork.
Painterly Original works will be provided to fuel the creative process and stoke the imagination. No experience or artistic skill required!
PRICING
All classes are $100 per canvas with a ten (10) student class minimum.
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to counteract the age of disposable experiences by teaching genuine creative skills. Painterly’s framework promotes the creation of keepsake artwork that carries lasting personal value, rather than becoming clutter. In a world where art is often mass-produced or prohibitively expensive, we offer an affordable and intentional pathway for our students to create their own meaningful, display-worthy creations rooted in solid artistic foundations.
-
Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism are fascinating because they represent a pivotal shift in art, moving the focus entirely from the external world to the artist's internal psychological state. These movements are compelling because the finished artwork is not a window onto reality, but a direct, visceral record of the artist's intense emotions, thoughts, or spontaneous physical action.
-
Expressionism includes pioneers like Edvard Munch and later German artists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, who used intense, distorted color and figures to express internal anxiety. Meanwhile, Abstract Expressionism in was dominated by the New York School, most famously featuring Jackson Pollock, known for his revolutionary drip technique, and Mark Rothko, renowned for his luminous, expansive color fields.
